Fabulous Flowers
Art can show us what people, places, animals and objects have looked like. That was the big idea behind the beautiful oil pastel flowers created by first graders. We read the book Georgia's Bones to learn about the life and art of artist Georgia O'Keeffe who was well known for her enlarged flower paintings. Students chose a flower image they were interested in and focused on using line, shape, color and value to create a realistic flower drawing.
Painting to Music!
Exploration is one of the best way to learn. To give students a chance to learn how the arts are a form of self expression, Mrs. Roberts put together a mix of all different music styles and genres for us. We discussed how color and music can influence our mood and express our thoughts and feelings. Then we let the music inspire the movement of our paint brush.
So what did we do with our painting to music papers...?
We worked together to create heart collages inspired by artist Jim Dine. We hunted for lines and shapes that we found interesting in our papers, cut them out and glued them to form unique hearts. Happy Valendines day!
I would be a dog because I am friendly like a dog.
We used model magic to create mini masks inspired by Mexican folk art masks. We thought about characteristics and personality traits of animals and then chose an animal that we felt we had something in common with for the subject of our sculpture. We decorated our masks with bright colors and patterns like artists do in Mexico.
Students chose everything from dogs, butterflies, spiders and koala bears!

Good Luck Dragons!
Happy New Year! At the end of January the new year is celebrated in China. Part of the festivities include a New Year's parade that features colorful dragon puppets and constumes. The dragon is a symbol of good luck and prosperity so we thought we would make our own puppets to bring us good luck for the new year.
Students used oil pastel to make patterns and added their own creative details to make sure their puppet was unique and original. They couldn't wait to put them on their hands and fly them around the room!
