and it is time for some butterflies! these are not just ordinary butterflies though. These paintings not only helped students learn how to mix tints and shades of a color to create value, but were able to make interdisciplinary connections in many different areas. Think about it...what connections can you make between butterflies and art, dance, science and math?

Personal Memory Collages
Third graders were inspired by the collages of African American artist Romare Bearden when creating their artwork. Some students brought in magazines and photographs from home to make their projects more personal. Their task was to create a collage with a variety of materials that expressed a personal memory. Here are some photos of students sharing their work. They needed to explain their memory and why it was important enough to document in their art. Photographs taken by Joshua Grade 3 Reid

Action Figures!
![Picture](/uploads/6/1/9/9/6199797/470517.jpg)
This was such a fun project that taught students all about the processes artists go through when creating 3 dimensional sculptures. We began by learning a gesture drawing technique to help us better understand how to capture the movement or pose of a figure without using details. The next step was to create a foil armature of our figure and pose it to show movement.
We then wrapped our sculptures in plaster craft so the pose would hold and we would have a hard surface to paint. Wrapping them in plaster made them look like mummies!
When the plaster dried we began painting the skin tone and clothing. The final step was to use fabric, yarn, felt and other materials to make our action figures look more realistic. We had students make football players, dancers, Pop singers and even one of our own teachers, Mr. Sweeney!

Wacky Watercolor Weavings!
![Picture](/uploads/6/1/9/9/6199797/8026021.jpg)
Third graders have been working hard to complete their watercolor weavings! This was one of those sneaky projects that looks easy, but actually take a lot of time and careful thinking.
Students started by creating 2 watercolor paintings that helped them to review the order of the color wheel. Then they had to cut vertical lines into one painting to create the warp strings followed by cutting their 2nd painting into strips becoming their weft strings. After that, we wove them together to create awesome abstract works of art!
